Del Mar City Beach
"Surfing USA"
Del Mar City Beach starts at Powerhouse Park and goes north all the way to the lagoon entrance at the San Dieguito River. Powerhouse Park is a great place to make your base for a day trip to Del Mar Beach. Get an early start to enjoy this beautiful beach for the entire day and then watch the sunset. Note that at high tide the beach can be narrow. If you walk south from Powerhouse Park you will be on South Beach tucked below steep colorful eroding bluffs.
Cardiff State Beach
Cardiff by the Sea
Cardiff State Beach is the long sandy strip along the west side of San Elijo Lagoon. If you want to see the lagoon they have a visitor center on Manchester Avenue nearby. Surfers enjoy the waves that break over the reef known as Seaside Reef, Cardiff Reef, or Tabletops. When the tide allows you can walk south on the sand to the beach at Tide Beach Park below the high bluffs of Solana Beach.
Oceanside Harbor Beach
Classic southern California beach town
Oceanside Harbor Beach is a large beach sitting in front of the Oceanside city harbor. Oceanside Pier is in the distance to the south and the marina is visible right behind the beach. There are volleyball courts, picnic areas, barbeques for grilling, and many other beach amenities. Fishermen can cast off the jetties at Harbor Beach and surfers ride the waves when conditions are right.
Moonlight State Beach
A place for midnight picnics
Moonlight State Beach is a California state park that is operated by the city of Encinitas. This is the main central beach of Encinitas. It has a grass park with a kids play area in addition to a large family-friendly beach. If you can’t find a space to lay out at Moonight Beach, then you can head south to D Street Beach or just head north toward Stone Steps Beach.
La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove
"The Jewel of San Diego"
La Jolla Shores is a mile-long crescent of prime sand beach favored by active beachgoers of all interests. Shielded by La Jolla Bay, it is also used as a launching ground for scuba diving and kayaking. At the northernmost point of La Jolla is Torrey Pines State Beach. A nature walk along the bluffs through native vegetation—including the signature Torrey Pine—leads to endless views of the Pacific. La Jolla Cove is a small deep water bay, flanked by sea caves accessible to adventurers in kayaks and on foot.
